The inspiration behind choosing the pieces of this concert is the old 19th century Viennese restaurant and pup Gasthaus zum Roten Igel - The Red Hedgehog. It was a place where Mendelssohn, Brahms, Schubert and Schumann were regular patrons gathering over hearty fair, while listening to live folk music performances.

The performers in this concert are:

Julian Bliss - clarinet
Benjamin Baker, Justine Cormack, Alexi Kenney, Marike Kruup, Sarah Lee - violins
Serenity Thurlow, Tal Amoore - violas
Sterling Elliott, Christine Jeon - cello

Let’s hear the first piece. It’s by Felix Mendelssohn. Welcome to the stage Alexi Kenney, Marike Kruup, Serenity Thurlow, and Ian Greenberg: Four Pieces for String Quartet Opus 110.

Each year, the At The World’s Edge Festival has a New Zealand composer in residence, and in 2024 Eve de Castro-Robinson was chosen to write a new piece for the festival. She decided to write a quartet for clarinet, violin, viola, and cello. There are quite a few movements, and the titles are rather descriptive. They are: Floating, Vigorous, Warm, Nimble, Mysterious, and Furious.

So, to perform this world premier, here are clarinettist Julian Bliss, violinist Justine Cormack, viola player Bryony Gibson-Cornish, and cellist Sterling Elliott. Earths Eye, by Eve de Castro-Robinson.

And just like that we are at the last piece to be performed at the 2024 At The World’s Edge Festival. It’s also by a composer who liked to go to the guesthouse The Red Hedgehog in Vienna. No doubt he would have heard some music there that inspired him to write this piece. It’s the String Quartet in C D956 by Franz Schubert.

It’s played here by Benjamin Baker and Alexi Kenney on violins, Bryony Gibson-Cornish on viola, and Sterling Elliott and Ian Greenberg on cellos.
