A man who shot his friend during a night time hunting trip had earlier smoked cannabis and told police the victim had shot himself.

While the victim, nine years on, has been left wondering what he did wrong.

The victim was at her Waikato home gaming with her headphones on when Joseph Hohepa Te Huia smashed a fly screen on a bathroom window and climbed inside.

The judge found the officer's actions were not only unlawful, but unwarranted, as the victim had not done anything wrong.
